Lenovo has unveiled the Lenovo Yoga 920 as the latest addition to its ‘distinctively different’ line of 2-in-1 convertible PC. The PC also comes as the successor or upgrade to the Lenovo Yoga 910, one of the slimmest laptops to offer an Intel Core processor.

Let’s have a peek at the offerings the Lenovo Yoga 920 2-in-1 machine brings on board.

Design and Display

In terms of design, body build and aesthetic, the Lenovo Yoga 920 follows the footsteps of the Yoga 910. While the Yoga 920 impresses with a finely finished premium metallic body and slim body (even slimmer than its predecessor), it does come with some bulk as it weighs roughly 1.4kg and a fingerprint susceptible body.

The Yoga 920 has a 13.9-inch IPS display in a FHD (1080 x 1920) resolution with ultra slim bezels. The top and side bezels are 5mm slim while the bottom bezel is slimmer because, unlike on the Yoga 910, the webcam has been relocated to the top of the display for better experience during Skype calls or when using any other VoIP conferencing services.

The display is joined to the body of the PC by six (6) strong and flexible watchband style metallic hinges. The hinges are at the same level as the laptop’s back (i.e they don’t stick out) and can rotate up to 180 degrees; allowing the PC to be used as a laptop, a tablet, or a presentation screen when you place it in a tent position.

The hinge is an impressive addition but it doesn’t provide much flexibility like 2-in-1 tablets with detachable keyboards would; the Microsoft Surface Go for example. The Yoga 920’s keyboard, when flipped to the back, still feels like what it is — a keyboard. Not totally a tablet like it’s meant to. However, it is quite interesting to know that the keys are backlit and when you use the Lenovo Yoga 920 in the ‘tablet mode’, you can turn off the buttons, so they don’t cause any interference.

On the left edge, a pair of Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack are neatly fitted. One of the USB-C ports (on the far edge) doubles as the charging ports and has the charging indicator light. A USB 3.0 port, power button and far-field mics to be used with Cortana and Microsoft’s digital assistant (from up to 13 feet away — even in standby mode) are on the right edge of the Yoga 920.

Stylus & Stylus holder

Lenovo included a great new addition to the Yoga 920: a stylus pen which it calls the “Active Pen”.

The Active Pen is powered by battery and comes with two buttons. The stylus has a ballpoint tip which —when used on the screen either for writing, drawing, or painting— responds well and quick without lag. To erase, you have to hold down one of the button which switches the top from a pen/brush to an eraser.

I’m still trying to fathom which is better between Microsoft’s ‘Surface Pen’ stylus (where the other end of the pen is the eraser) or Lenovo’s hold-a-button-to-erase stylus. I think I prefer the Surface Pen tho.

As impressing as the stylus is, the stylus holder isn’t quite much to write home about. The stylus holder is made out of plastic and fits into the only USB 3.0 port. That’s not all, it blocks the power button too. Imagine having to remove and replace the pen holder each time you want to power on (or off) your PC. Tragic!

However, it might interest you to know that if your purchase the Lenovo Yoga 920, you won’t have to shell out extra cash for the Active Pen as it comes out of the box with the PC.

Lenovo Yoga 920 models: Processor, Storage, and Price

There are three models of the Lenovo Yoga 920. The first (base) model sports an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 256GB of SSD storage, and 8GB of RAM. The selling price of this model has been fixed to cost $1,199 and availability will be strictly to the US and UK.

The second model comes with the same RAM size as the model above but with bigger 512gB SDD storage and faster Intel Core i7-8550U processor. This model is priced at $1,549 and just like the above model, will be solely available in the UK and US.

Thr third model is the best of them all as it features an Intel Core i7-8550U processor, 16GB RAM, and 1TB of SSD. In addition, this model will have a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) screen; unlike the FHD display used on other models. As expected, this model is the most expensive; costs $1,999 and availability has been restricted to the US and Australia only.

To truly understand the relationship that exists between children and technology today, let’s look at a research study that was conducted in 2009 that will put a lot of things into perspective.

The study found that, on average, most kids spent more than five-and-a-half hours on technologies that weren’t school-related at all. A case of abuse of the internet? Maybe. But the problem goes beyond that.

Children being addicted to technology is no longer a rarity. Compulsive internet use is very prevalent amongst kids. According to statistical data, 95% of eight to eleven year old children have accessed the internet at least once in their lives.

This data doesn’t particularly point to compulsive internet use amongst kids but it does put things into perspective. Technology for kids is growing. Until now, technology for kids has been constrained to the entertainment sector.

However these days, even educational institutions are adopting technology for kids. In short – technology has become indispensable in the lives of kids and some parents have even started leveraging this interdependence to their advantage.

The new world punishments are ‘No Wi-Fi for a week’, ‘Confiscate the PS 4’, ‘No TV for a week’ etc. That’s how some parents get things done by their children. Right or wrong? That’s for you to decide.

This point just further emphasizes how addictive technology really is. Recently, a kid was sent to rehab for playing too much of an online game.

2. Formulate A Timetable:

Decades ago – there were no smartphones and yet, people had all the fun and even more than this generation does. That’s the issue that you have to sensitize children with.

Teach them activities that you did while growing up. It could be a game of hopscotch, making paper planes, catching insects- whatever. The objective is to show them that life is fun even in the absence of technology.

The best thing that you can possibly do is- identify the games that they play on their phone, console etc. and try to get to play it in real life. Take the initiative to encourage the development of hobbies in your children- it could do wonders!

4. Lead By Being An Example:

The best way for parents to reinforce their messages is by practicing what they preach. Make it easy for your child to give up technology. It should not seem like a punishment but it should like it’s the right way to live.

What To Do When Nothing Else Works?

Try implementing the methods mentioned above. More often than not- they work. However,  it does take some time to implement these strategies and it may take even longer for one to see tangible results from this experiment. Give it some time. Be patient.

At the launch of the Meizu 16, there was another smartphone that you was introduced and it comes as the more premium version. The Meizu 16 Plus is the best of the pair and it comes with a bigger screen, RAM and storage space than the Meizu 16. That is all about the difference there is between the two high-end smartphones but basically you have the same chipset, camera, screen resolution and a list of other things.

Except being just a bit bigger, the Meizu 16 Plus has the same premium build has the Meizu 16. It is available in black and white just like the other model with the glass casing.  There’s the aluminium frame and a 6 layer glass topping at the rear. That being said, there is Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor here with as usual Adreno 630 GPU. The lesser model which has 6GB RAM will be shipping with 128GB space for storage from Meizu. The smartphone has Android 8.0 Oreo on board with Flyme UI skin.

Remember the LG Q8 from last year? This year’s model have been released into the market with a more attractive look. Like most of these recent phones, it also features a large screen, reduced bezels and 18:9 aspect ratio. It looks comparatively premium than it actually is with the mid-range hardware it has. Like LG’s tradition, the smartphone will be MIL-STD-810G compliant according to US military evaluation this smartphone is tough. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of the details, shall we?

Design and Display

It is quite clear that aesthetics was top priority when the smartphone was being built. The LG Q8 (2018) is crafted in a way that it has a smooth finish with nice rounded edges. You can also count on LG to throw in their military testing procedure meaning the smartphone is water and dust proof with an IP68 rating. The smartphone comes with a centrally placed single rear camera with flash and fingerprint scanner tighr under it. I wish to also mention that the smartphone come with a stylus pen.

Cubot is a Chinese OEM that is largely concerned with low budget smartphones where it has carved a niche for itself. Although, it is certainly not one of the high flyers in this category, it offers highly affordable smartphones with a fair number of features. With these I am introducing the Cubot R11 which falls into the category above, albeit, having a more stylish design. However, the images from these companies can be quite misleading to what the actual smartphone look like so don’t expect too much as it is just an entry level smartphone.

Design and Display

For a change, the entry level smartphone has a metallic rear panel which is quite impressive but with a glossy appearance. It is shaped in the trendy 18:9 way, with the usual bezel reduction mostly at the side. At the rear, there is the iPhone X kind of camera design with flash in between. Apparently, the smartphone is a bit thick even with the small battery it has measuring 8.85mm.

Being a budget smartphone, the display is not with the crisp colour affair you’d enjoy from flagships. However, it is within the low budget scheme sporting an HD+ resolution. A quality that you can still enjoy movies, games and so on with. The size of the display is 5.5-inch which is somewhat average considering we are in the era of big screens on smartphones.

As for the battery on the smartphone you don’t really have or need much power to begin with. Features on the smartphone include a low resolution display with average size, 3G connectivity amongst others, all of which does not weigh much on the battery. To level up the performance, it has a 3GB RAM and a 16GB storage space from the factory. Added storage space can amount to 128GB at most using a memory card. Leave the fancy name aside, the smartphone is as basic as it comes  Although, the effort to bring trendy features to low budget buyers is commendable. The Tecno Camon iSky is apparently meant for first time buyers who are just entering the smartphone scene. According to the pitch by Tecno, the smartphone will be shipping with Face Unlock, Fullview display, latest Android version, AnyLight front and AnyLight back camera –more on that later. What more can you ask for in a budget smartphone?

Design and Display

At the consideration of the budget status of the smartphone, the Tecno Camon iSky is a good build. It features a modern 18:9 aspect ratio with slim bezels and q plastic unibody. As part of the effort to reduce bezels ,the navigation buttons have been moved on screen. While at the top of the screen, you have the ambient light sensor, earpiece speaker, proximity sensor and camera. The audio jack is at the top and MicroUSB port at the bottom while the speaker is situated on the back.

One of the cut backs on price is quite obvious on the display seen in the Tecno Camon iSky. It comes with a 5.45-inch FWVGA display which is noticeably pale on the colour front. The screen is illuminated by a 480 X 960 pixels which is fair enough for basic functions.

The Tecno Camon iSky comes equipped with an ample battery for a low budget smartphone. Here, you have a 3, 050mAh battery to work with. That is quite enough looking at the low specs on the smartphone. Perks like fast charge is not available on the smartphone, unless you will be looking at the likes of the Tecno Camon X Pro.

Even at the low price point, the Camon series still offers a level of camera centric improvements. The Tecno Camon iSky has a 13MP rear camera  with bokeh effect which is impressive for a budget buy. Selfies will be taken on the smartphone by no other than an 8MP sensor with beautification after snapping addition. Both cameras are tagged AnyLight which means it will be good to shoot in any condition, a feat I highly doubt is attainable

Beneath the surface ,the smartphone has a Quad-core MediaTek processor with a clockspeed of 1.28GHz. This is a capable chipset when it come to basic task on a smartphone but is bound to stutter when more rigorous usage kicks in. Also, there is 2GB RAM on it going with 16GB in built storage space. Vivo so far this year have been very industrious pioneering new techs like in-display fingerprint sensor and all display front  with pop-up camera. The smartphone is built with a notched display and standard middle class hardware wrapped in a mettallic body. As regards to how the Vivo Y81 looks, the answer is it looks ravishing with an all round metallic design.
